Alexa+ adopts MCP for third-party builders
Amazon's Alexa+ now supports the Model Context Protocol for service integrations, plus an AI smart-home toolkit covering Bosch, iRobot, Whirlpool, and more.
Amazon announced two developer-facing upgrades to Alexa+ on July 23. First, an AI-powered smart-home toolkit that maps natural-language requests to specific device features, so Alexa+ can, for example, pick the right washing machine cycle from a spoken instruction rather than requiring a fixed command phrase. Fourteen brands are live on it at launch, including Bosch, iRobot, Whirlpool, Yale Home, and Ecovacs, spanning appliances, locks, and cleaning robots.
Second, and more consequential for builders, Alexa+ now supports the Model Context Protocol: through the Alexa+ for Builders platform, a service provider can bring an existing MCP server, have Amazon inspect it, and get a simulator-ready integration path back, rather than building a dedicated Alexa Skill from scratch. Canva, Cengage, Headspace, Priceline, Viator, Virgin Atlantic, Lyft, and several travel and productivity services are the first MCP integrations live under this system. A separate Amazon Wallet feature lets Alexa+ complete purchases with saved payment methods for services like Fandango and TaskRabbit. Amazon reports Alexa+ users engage 2 to 3 times more across topics once smart-home devices are connected, and integrated-service engagement runs 6 times higher.
This is one of the more concrete “official MCP support” moves from a major consumer platform so far, alongside Cloudflare’s and Anthropic’s own tooling. If you maintain an MCP server for another integration already, extending it to Alexa+ is now a lighter lift than a custom Skill build, worth a look if voice is a plausible channel for your service.
