Fable 5 becomes a permanent Max feature

Anthropic ends the Fable 5 promo cycle: it joins Max and Team Premium plans for good on July 20, at 50% of limits, while Pro drops to API pricing.

Update, July 18: Anthropic has ended the promotional back-and-forth and given Fable 5 a permanent home in two subscription tiers. Starting July 20, Max and Team Premium subscribers get standing Fable 5 access baked into their plan, capped at half their normal weekly allowance, with no separate credits required. Pro and Team Standard subscribers keep access only through usage credits, and get a one-time $100 grant to ease the switch; the $20/month Pro tier does not gain standing Fable 5 access. The July 19 promotional cutoff described below is superseded by this permanent arrangement, confirmed via the company’s official account and reported by independent commentators the same day. The original two-extension account below is preserved for the record.

Update, July 14: Anthropic has extended the Fable 5 promotional window a second time, to July 19, 2026, 11:59:59 PM Pacific. The support article cited below has been revised to state the new cutoff, and the company’s official account posted the same date on July 13, tying it to a parallel extension of Claude Code’s 50%-higher weekly rate limits. The terms of the promotion are unchanged, only the cutoff date has moved. The original account below is preserved with the new date folded in.

Anthropic extended the promotional window for Claude Fable 5 twice now: first by five days, from the original July 7 cutoff to July 12, then again to July 19, 2026, 11:59:59 PM Pacific, the company confirmed on its support site and via its official account.

Through that date, Pro, Max, Team, and premium-seat Enterprise subscribers can use Fable 5 for up to 50% of their weekly usage limits at no extra charge. Free-tier users, legacy Enterprise standard seats, and API customers are excluded from the promotional window entirely. After July 19, Fable 5 drops out of plan usage limits altogether and requires separately purchased usage credits, priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, roughly double Opus 4.8’s rate, and among the highest published prices for a generally available Anthropic model.

The extension is a small concession in what has otherwise been a rocky release. Fable 5 briefly lost export-control clearance after a government directive earlier this summer before Anthropic restored access, and its pricing model has shifted more than once since launch. Two extensions inside a week suggest Anthropic is buying time on compute capacity rather than settling on a permanent free allocation.

For any team with Fable 5 baked into a workflow, coding assistance, planning, or otherwise, the practical move is to use the days before July 19 to measure exactly how much of that usage genuinely needs Fable 5’s capability versus a cheaper model, before the $10/$50 rate applies to anything beyond the free allocation.

As it turned out, Anthropic never let that rate stand as the default for its best subscribers. Commentators who track the shift, including independent LLM analyst Simon Willison, pointed to OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol landing at a fraction of Fable 5’s price as the pressure that made an API-only Fable untenable for Max and Team Premium: a $100 or $200 monthly plan that excludes the flagship model is a hard sell once a cheaper competitor covers the same ground.
