Google scraps its AI Studio mobile app

Google canceled its standalone AI Studio app for iOS and Android before launch, despite 800,000+ preorders, folding app-building into Gemini instead.

Google confirmed on July 31 that it is canceling the standalone AI Studio app for Android and iOS before it ever launched, even after the app drew more than 800,000 preorders following its debut at I/O 2026. The official Google AI Studio account explained the reasoning:

An entirely different approach: one where apps emerge naturally, in the course of your everyday conversations with Gemini.

The company is partnering with the Gemini app team to build that experience instead, for mobile and desktop.

Google gave no timeline for when Gemini-based app-building features will ship, only that both teams are working on it. The web version of AI Studio is unaffected.

What it means for operators

If any part of your workflow assumed a dedicated AI Studio mobile app, that surface isn’t shipping as announced; budget for the gap rather than waiting on a Gemini replacement with no committed date. It’s also a data point on Google’s current AI product cadence: a feature announced at an I/O keynote with real preorder numbers still got killed with little warning, the same week Google pulled its Earth AI feature a day after launch. See the lesson in that reversal before building tightly on top of an unstable Google AI product.
