IBM will fold GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work into its consulting arm and train tens of thousands of staff on OpenAI's tools under an expanded partnership.
IBM and OpenAI announced an expanded strategic partnership on August 13 to sell AI-driven consulting to enterprise customers. IBM Consulting Advantage, the firm’s AI-assisted consulting platform, will fold in OpenAI’s model lineup, including ChatGPT Work and the Codex and GPT-5.6 tools, and OpenAI’s Daybreak Cyber Partner Program will connect with IBM’s own Autonomous Security offering. The companies plan joint, industry-specific builds for financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The bigger commitment is on people, not just product. IBM plans to retrain and certify a large share of its consulting workforce on OpenAI’s tools over the coming months, mostly existing staff rather than new hires, and stand up a group of “Forward Deployed Experts” trained through OpenAI’s Partner Network. The deal builds on a narrower cybersecurity partnership the two companies struck in June.
What it means for you
This is a distribution play for OpenAI as much as a capability one: IBM Consulting reaches enterprise buyers who would never evaluate ChatGPT Work directly, and every one of those tens of thousands of retrained consultants becomes a channel that defaults to OpenAI’s stack over a competitor’s. If you’re already an IBM Consulting client, ask which specific engagements will route through OpenAI’s models versus IBM’s own tooling, and what that means for where your data goes. It’s the same enterprise-distribution logic behind Writer’s new Palmyra X6 model, vendors are competing as much on who delivers the AI to your desk as on which model sits underneath it.
