Nscale buys Anyscale, the Ray creator
British neocloud Nscale is paying $1.65B for Anyscale, the Ray creator that scales AI workloads, per Bloomberg, folding orchestration into its infrastructure.
Nscale, a British AI neocloud, is acquiring Anyscale, the startup built by the creators of the open-source Ray distributed-computing framework, for $1.65 billion according to a Bloomberg report cited by TechCrunch. Anyscale pivoted from general distributed computing to scaling and serving large language models after GPT-3 shipped in 2022, offering developer tools, observability, and orchestration on top of Ray; it said quarterly revenue grew 70% sequentially and was valued at $1.38 billion in a 2022 round. Nscale, which raised $2 billion in a March Series C at a $14.6 billion valuation from investors including Nvidia, Nokia, and Dell, will add Anyscale’s roughly 200 employees and keep the Anyscale brand operating for existing customers. “Together, Anyscale and Nscale can co-design the software layer and infrastructure beneath it, something that neither company could do as effectively by optimizing its layer alone,” Anyscale said in a statement.
What it means for operators
Nscale already spans energy, data centers, and orchestration software; adding workload-scaling software closes the loop from raw compute to the layer that actually schedules your training and inference jobs across it. If you run production workloads on Ray or Anyscale today, watch for how pricing and roadmap change once it’s owned by a neocloud with its own hardware to sell alongside it.
