NYT files sanctions motion over OpenAI evidence
The New York Times filed a sanctions motion July 9 accusing OpenAI of concealing tools and datasets that identify copyrighted content in ChatGPT outputs.
The NYT suit has expanded since its 2023 filing: Microsoft was added as a defendant earlier this year. A sanctions motion, if granted, can limit what OpenAI presents at trial or result in adverse-inference instructions to a jury, making this a significant escalation beyond the underlying copyright claims.
