ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in India start showing ads next month, with a 50-brand pilot and agency partnerships with WPP and Omnicom.
OpenAI will begin showing ads on ChatGPT’s Free and Go subscription tiers in India, with an ad manager launching next month, the company said August 27. India is ChatGPT’s largest market by weekly active users at over 100 million, with most of those users on the free or lowest-priced tier, which makes it a natural first stop for ad monetization outside a market OpenAI already tested. The initial rollout includes about 50 participating brands, a minimum daily ad-manager budget of roughly ₹725 (about $7.60), and partnerships with ad agencies WPP and Omnicom to bring in advertisers. Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s head of global ads solutions, framed the pitch to advertisers this way:
With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments.

What it means for you
Ads are landing on ChatGPT’s cheapest tiers market by market, not everywhere at once, so treat India as a preview of where U.S. and European free/Go tiers are headed rather than a one-off. If any part of your workflow leans on ChatGPT’s free tier specifically because it’s free of vendor influence, that assumption is eroding on a predictable schedule, the same dynamic already playing out across other tools that started free and are finding ways to monetize the users who never upgraded.
