OpenAI starts testing ads in ChatGPT

OpenAI began testing sponsored ads at the bottom of ChatGPT responses for logged-in US adults on the Free and Go tiers, with paid plans staying ad-free.

OpenAI has started testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers in the US. Ads appear labeled as sponsored at the bottom of a response and are shaped by what a user is discussing, their chat history, and how they’ve reacted to prior ads, though OpenAI says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s actual answers and conversations stay private from advertisers. Ads won’t show to users predicted to be under 18 or near sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics.

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers stay ad-free. Free-tier users can also opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily free messages, or upgrade to a paid plan.

What it means for you

This is the first time a frontier chatbot from a major lab has shipped ads to production, not just floated the idea, and it puts real pressure on how you plan around free-tier access for clients or teammates. If ad-free, unbiased-seeming output matters for what you’re building, or for a client relationship, factor the ChatGPT Plus upgrade into your budget now rather than after ads start showing up in someone’s session. It also fits the broader pattern in free frontier models routing: the free tier is never really free, it’s monetized somehow, and ads are simply the most visible version of that trade.
