River AI raises $1.1B for personal agents

River AI, founded by ex-xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin two months ago, raised $1.1B led by General Catalyst to let users fine-tune and own their agents.

River AI, the startup Igor Babuschkin launched roughly two months ago after leaving xAI, has raised $1.1 billion led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek also participating. Valuation wasn’t disclosed. Babuschkin previously worked at DeepMind and OpenAI before co-founding xAI.

River AI’s pitch is different from most agent startups: rather than building another wrapper around a hosted frontier model, it gives developers an API to fine-tune open-source models using reinforcement learning and low-rank adaptation, aiming to let individual users train and own their own AI assistants instead of renting access to a centralized service.

What it means for you

Most of the agent market today assumes you call someone else’s model and hope it stays available, priced the same, and behaved the way it did last week. River AI’s bet is that enough builders want the opposite: a personally-trainable agent stack they actually control, not a subscription to one. That’s a real answer to concerns raised in guides like what happens when your AI model gets switched off and open models good enough for operators, even though $1.1 billion at a two-month-old company with no disclosed valuation is still a bet on an unproven distribution model, not a settled outcome. Worth tracking if your own roadmap depends on model stability you don’t control.
