a16z raises $1.1B just for AI hardware

Andreessen Horowitz launched the Machine Age Fund, a dedicated $1.1 billion vehicle for chips, power, networking, and robotics rather than AI software.

Andreessen Horowitz announced the Machine Age Fund on August 28, a $1.1 billion vehicle dedicated to what it calls the physical layer of AI: chips, memory, networking, storage, data centers, robotics, and home AI hardware. It sits separate from the firm’s existing infrastructure, American Dynamism, and growth funds, though partners from all three invest alongside it. General partners Martin Casado and Raghu Raghuram lead it, with Ben Horowitz, David Ulevitch, and David George also named.

The internal number a16z disclosed matters more than the launch itself: hardware startups now account for more than 20% of the firm’s deal flow, up from a small fraction a few years ago at a shop built on software bets.

The number driving the bet

a16z points to power density as the constraint: AI server racks have gone from 5 to 10 kilowatts a few years ago to 100 to 250 kilowatts today, with a path to 1 megawatt per rack within three years. That is a power, cooling, and data-center-design story, not a chip story, and it is the gap the fund says it wants to fill. The firm has already backed hardware startups including Unconventional AI, Nexthop, Volta, Atoms and Heron Power, so this scales an existing bet rather than starting a new one.

For operators, the fund itself changes nothing about your stack this week. What it signals is where a major pool of institutional capital thinks the next constraint sits, not model capability, but the physical capacity to run models at the scale enterprise deployment now demands. It landed two days before a smaller, stranger version of the same bet, a private-aviation company merging into a $500 million AI data-center operator, and it follows Amazon tripling its own Nvidia GPU order five months after the last one. Different pools of capital, same read on where the bottleneck sits.
