Amazon plans to consolidate its Nova models

Amazon is moving to fold its Nova model portfolio into a single multimodal frontier model rather than maintaining a separate model for each capability, according to reporting first surfaced by Business Insider and confirmed by TechRepublic and Technology.org. The company is deprecating Nova Premier, Nova Omni, Nova Canvas (image generation), and Nova Reel (video generation), with staff describing the affected models as running in a “keep the lights on” maintenance state: supported for existing customers, no longer a development focus. Resources are reportedly shifting to a new frontier-model effort headed by researcher Pieter Abbeel, expected to debut at Amazon’s re:Invent conference later this year, possibly still carrying the Nova name. The reshuffle comes the same week AWS signed a $410 million compute deal with Recursive Superintelligence, suggesting Amazon is simultaneously trimming its own model lineup while betting more heavily on compute infrastructure for other labs’ frontier efforts. Amazon says it will keep supporting a narrower surviving lineup: Nova 2 Lite and Nova 2 Sonic (lightweight and speech models), Nova Forge (a customization service), and Nova Act (an agent-automation model). The shift comes alongside reported headcount reductions inside Amazon’s artificial general intelligence division.

This is a strategy signal more than an immediate operational one, since Amazon hasn’t published sunset dates, but the direction is clear enough to act on. If your stack calls Nova Canvas for image generation or Nova Reel for video, or you’ve built around Nova Premier specifically, treat this as an early warning to document your dependencies and start evaluating the eventual single-model replacement or an alternative provider, rather than waiting for a formal deprecation notice that historically arrives with a shorter runway than teams want. It doesn’t touch Nova Act or the agent tooling AWS has been building out for Bedrock AgentCore, which the company is treating as separate infrastructure investment, not part of the wind-down.
