Anthropic hires Tom Blomfield for compute
Monzo and GoCardless co-founder Tom Blomfield is taking a leave of absence from Y Combinator to join Anthropic's compute team, working with Tom Brown.
Tom Blomfield, who co-founded Monzo and GoCardless, has stepped away from his Y Combinator partner role on leave to work on Anthropic’s compute team. He announced the move on X on July 13, saying he will work alongside Anthropic co-founder and chief compute officer Tom Brown. Blomfield joined YC as a group partner in 2021 and became a full partner in 2023, mentoring founders across four batches.
He co-founded GoCardless in 2011 and Monzo in 2015, stepping down as Monzo’s chief executive in 2020. Both companies later carried a combined peak valuation above $9 billion; Monzo has since passed 10 million customers, and GoCardless agreed this year to a roughly 1.05 billion euro acquisition by Mollie. At Anthropic, his new title is member of technical staff, a designation the company applies broadly across its senior hires.

Blomfield explained the move himself:
“Powerful AI has the potential to improve the life of every human on earth and, as we enter the early stages of recursive self-improvement, availability of compute becomes one of the most important issues to solve.”
Whatever one makes of that framing, the practical read is that Anthropic keeps recruiting proven operators for compute, not just researchers for models. It follows a run of senior moves into the company, including researchers who left Google for Anthropic, alongside its own infrastructure bets like the $19 billion TeraWulf data center lease. For operators watching the frontier labs, the signal is less about Blomfield personally and more about how much weight Anthropic is putting behind the physical side of scaling, ahead of the IPO speculation now surrounding it and OpenAI alike.
