Anthropic signs $35B compute deal with Lambda

The six-year Nvidia-backed cloud agreement, built on a Texas site run by a former bitcoin miner, pushes Anthropic's compute contracts past $135B for the year.

Anthropic signed a six-year, roughly $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Lambda on September 1 to bring more Nvidia GPU capacity online for Claude. The structure is unusual: Nvidia holds the lease on the data center and supplies the chips, Lambda resells that capacity to Anthropic, and the physical build is happening in Nueces County, Texas, on a site developed by Hut 8, a company transitioning out of bitcoin mining into AI data center operations.

The deal follows Anthropic’s separate $45 billion, six-year commitment to Nscale for capacity out of a West Virginia campus, announced earlier this year. Combined, reporting puts Anthropic’s compute contracts at roughly $135 billion committed for 2026, part of the broader wave of multi-year, multi-billion-dollar infrastructure deals frontier labs have been signing to lock in Nvidia-class capacity ahead of demand.

The pattern worth tracking here isn’t the dollar figure so much as who’s actually operating the hardware. Traditional hyperscalers aren’t the only ones building these sites anymore, non-traditional operators like Lambda and Hut 8, backed directly by Nvidia’s own balance sheet, are becoming a meaningful part of how frontier labs source GPU capacity, a supply chain shift that changes who has leverage if capacity gets tight again. It also lands the same day as Anthropic’s new Enterprise Frontier Safeguards launch, another reminder the company is scaling infrastructure and enterprise trust commitments in parallel.
