Anthropic expands free Claude for scientists

Archive item — written before sources were shown.

Anthropic is offering 10,000 free Claude seats to academic and nonprofit researchers for a year, plus up to $50,000 in extra credits per project.

Anthropic launched a dedicated Claude team plan for scientists, offering 10,000 free standard seats for one year to verified principal investigators at academic and nonprofit research institutions, who can add lab members to their plan. A premium tier with 5x usage limits costs $15 a month per seat. Researchers can separately apply through Anthropic’s AI for Science program for up to $50,000 in additional credits per project, aimed at compute-heavy work like protein design.

Biology and chemistry researchers on the free and premium tiers are limited to Opus-class models rather than Anthropic’s more capable Mythos-class models; Anthropic says a separate government partnership program is being developed to give life-sciences researchers access to those. The new plan sits alongside Anthropic’s narrower rare-disease research credits program launched in July, extending the same basic approach, free or discounted Claude access for underfunded research, to a much broader academic and nonprofit audience.

What it means for you

This is one of the more concrete “free AI for research” offers on the market right now, with real numbers attached rather than vague promises: a year of seats, a fixed premium price, and a defined credit ceiling per project. If you’re at a university, teaching hospital, or nonprofit lab and have been paying out of pocket or rationing Claude access, it’s worth having your PI verify eligibility and apply before the initial 10,000-seat pool fills, especially since Anthropic says it plans to expand the pool rather than replace it.
