OpenAI launched commercial operations in Brazil with a São Paulo office, its first outside the U.S. in the Americas, plus deals with schools and a hospital.
OpenAI launched commercial operations in Brazil on August 27 with an office in São Paulo, its first formal presence in the Americas outside the United States. Brazil is one of ChatGPT’s three largest markets by weekly active users, who now send roughly 215 million messages a day, nearly double the volume of a year ago.
The local team announced a set of institutional deals to go with the office: the ITA engineering school gets access for coursework, the IMPA mathematics institute is studying AI’s effect on scientific research, Hospital das Clínicas is piloting a clinical-information tool, and the São Paulo city government signed on to use the tech for municipal administration, alongside plans to work directly with Brazilian businesses and developers.
What it means for you
A dedicated office plus named institutional partnerships, not just consumer app growth, signals OpenAI intends to compete for government and enterprise contracts in Brazil the way it already does in the U.S., which raises the bar for any local or regional AI vendor selling into those same institutions. It also follows Meta VP Sandhya Devanathan’s move to lead OpenAI’s Southeast Asia operations, part of the same pattern: OpenAI is building out regionally staffed teams in its largest non-U.S. markets rather than running them remotely.
