Austria asks EU to host Anthropic

Austria’s state secretary for digitalisation, Alexander Pröll, sent a letter to Henna Virkkunen, the EU Commission’s executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, urging European member states to explore “the strategic establishment and participation of Anthropic within the European Union.” Pröll did not specify a mechanism; the letter left open whether that means a European subsidiary, data-residency arrangement, equity stake, or another structure. The move follows the US export-control order that led Anthropic to disable its frontier models globally, cutting off European access alongside everyone else’s.
