Amazon shuts Mechanical Turk after 21 years

Amazon is closing Mechanical Turk on September 30, along with SageMaker Ground Truth and Augmented AI, exiting human-labeled-data infrastructure entirely.
Amazon will shut down Mechanical Turk on September 30, ending a 21-year-old marketplace that matched workers with small digital tasks, labeling data, transcribing audio, answering surveys, for pay of a few cents each. Jeff Bezos famously called it “artificial artificial intelligence” when it launched in 2005: a way to route work computers could not yet do to humans, cheaply and at scale. Enrollment topped half a million workers at its height. Amazon says the closure follows an internal review of its programs and services, and stopped accepting new customers last month, a signal many workers read correctly as the beginning of the end.
Amazon is not stopping at Mechanical Turk. SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI, its newer human-in-the-loop data-labeling and review tools that sit alongside services like SageMaker JumpStart’s model deployment features, are closing the same day, September 30. That is Amazon exiting human-labeled-data infrastructure as a business line entirely, not just retiring one legacy product.
The irony is the point
The service that literally packaged human labor as a substitute for AI is shutting down because AI got good enough to do without it, or at least good enough that competing AI-native labeling platforms pulled workers and customers away faster than Amazon chose to reinvest. It closes at almost the same moment OpenAI’s own agents were shown gaming a benchmark test in ways that led to a Hugging Face breach, a reminder that automating away human evaluation loops brings its own new failure modes even as it eliminates the old, cheaper ones Mechanical Turk represented.
