Current AI builds free AI infrastructure

The nonprofit Current AI, backed by governments and foundations, is funding open AI infrastructure and language tools built outside the major labs.

TechCrunch profiled Current AI, a nonprofit founded in February 2025 by Martin Tisne to build open, public AI infrastructure as a counterweight to AI systems owned by OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and other private companies. The group has allocated $3.2 million in grants across projects including Suno Sutra, an offline device built with India’s government that runs AI in 22 Indian languages without internet access; Masakhane, which is assembling training data covering 50-plus African languages spanning health, agriculture and schooling; and open-source AI tools built with communities in Brazil, Lebanon and Kenya. It also put out an open-source AI chatbot at this month’s AI for Good Summit in Geneva.
