OpenAI details its ChatGPT teen-safety plan

OpenAI published a policy post on July 16 arguing teens should have access to ChatGPT under safeguards rather than being blocked until adulthood, citing that nearly 9 in 10 teen users say they use it for learning, information or skill-building in a given week. The post lays out OpenAI’s safety stack for teens: automatic age estimation, a Study Mode built for learning rather than answer-giving, break reminders, content filters, and parental controls that let a linked parent set quiet hours, disable features like voice or image generation, and receive safety notifications, without giving parents access to the teen’s actual conversations.
