Fable 5 exits subscriptions July 8
After July 7, Fable 5 leaves Pro/Max/Team plan limits and bills through usage credits at $10/$50 per million input/output tokens.
Fable 5 has been included in Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans for up to 50% of weekly usage limits since it returned globally on July 1 after an export-control suspension. That window closes after July 7. From July 8, Fable 5 requests no longer draw from subscription limits. They draw from usage credits at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
If you have not enabled usage credits, Fable 5 requests will fail when you try to run them on your plan. Enable credits at claude.ai under Settings, then Usage.
Anthropic added spending controls to the credits system: a $2,000 daily redemption limit, a configurable monthly cap, usage alerts as you approach the cap, and an optional auto-reload that tops up the balance when it crosses a threshold you set.
Not permanent
A Claude Code lead engineer stated that Fable 5 is expected to return to subscriptions once Anthropic has sufficient capacity. The shift to credits is a capacity management tool, not a pricing restructure. No timeline has been given.
The practical risk is not the rate change for careful users. It is that a workflow running Fable 5 without monitoring will accumulate credits charges before anyone notices.
For teams
Before July 8: audit which workflows route to Fable 5 and which can run on Sonnet 5 for the bulk of tasks. Fable 5 at $50 per million output tokens is the right tool for the hardest reasoning and coding work, not for high-volume summarization or drafting that Sonnet 5 handles at $10 per million. Set a monthly cap now rather than after the first unexpected charge.
