Gemini Spark lands on Mac with MCP support
Google's Gemini Spark is now on macOS for US AI Ultra subscribers, with local file access, app integrations, and custom MCP connectors.
Google launched Gemini Spark for macOS on July 1 as a beta available to US-based Google AI Ultra subscribers ($99/month). The app integrates with the Gemini desktop client and brings local file organization, real-time topic tracking, and connection to Google Workspace (Tasks, Keep, Docs, Sheets).
Third-party integrations in the initial release include Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. Custom Model Context Protocol connectors are supported, meaning any MCP server (whether a database, internal tool, or external API) can be added by users to extend Spark’s capabilities.
Planned additions include multi-step task assignment across devices and remote task handling where desktop-initiated tasks can be monitored from a phone.
The competitive picture
Gemini Spark’s Mac launch puts Google directly alongside Claude Desktop (Anthropic) and Copilot (Microsoft) in the local desktop agent category. The MCP support is the most meaningful addition for builders: it means the same integration work done for Claude Desktop can serve Spark with minimal changes, lowering the cost of supporting multiple AI clients.
The Ultra subscriber gate keeps initial volumes small. The $99/month price point positions it above the free and Pro tiers of competing products, which will limit adoption during the beta period.
The X MCP server launched last week is one example of a connector that would work inside Spark immediately. The broader question of which desktop agent to build for first is now a real decision for teams building integrations.
