OpenAI chief futurist Joshua Achiam departs
Achiam, who previously led OpenAI's now-disbanded mission-alignment team, departs after nearly nine years, joining recent AI-safety-linked exits.
Joshua Achiam, OpenAI’s chief futurist and former head of its now-disbanded mission-alignment team, told colleagues on July 1 that he’s leaving the company after nearly nine years, Wired reported July 7. Achiam wrote that “the world is in on the secret now” and that he feels able to keep working on OpenAI’s mission from outside a frontier lab. His exit follows other safety-linked departures including Jan Leike, Miles Brundage, Steven Adler, and Andrea Vallone.
