Midjourney buys astrology app Co-Star
Image-generation lab Midjourney acquired astrology app Co-Star, which has 4.3M users, bringing its roughly two dozen employees and consumer-app skills in-house.
Midjourney has acquired Co-Star, the social astrology app with roughly 4.3 million monthly active users that generates birth charts and AI-assisted horoscopes, compatibility readings, and astrological advice. Deal terms were not disclosed. Co-Star’s entire team of about two dozen employees is joining Midjourney. Neither company has issued a statement with direct quotes; the deal was first reported by Bloomberg and confirmed independently.
Midjourney has built its business almost entirely on Discord-based image and video generation, with no consumer-facing standalone app of its own. Co-Star’s team brings exactly that experience: shipping and operating a consumer mobile app at scale. The likely near-term read is that Midjourney wants Co-Star’s engineering talent and app infrastructure to finally ship a standalone Midjourney app outside Discord, rather than that it wants to get into astrology content specifically.
This is the second AI-company consumer acquisition in a week alongside Cognition’s purchase of the text-message agent Poke, and both follow the same shape: an AI lab with a strong core product buying a smaller team that has already solved the consumer-distribution problem the lab hasn’t. If you’re evaluating what happens when a vendor you depend on gets acquired, Co-Star users are now a live test case, watch whether Midjourney keeps the app running as-is or folds its userbase into a broader Midjourney consumer play over the next few months.
