New York halts new data centers for a year

Governor Hochul signed an executive order pausing permits for new hyperscale data centers for up to a year, the first such statewide moratorium in the US.

The executive order pauses state permits for data centers of 50 megawatts or larger for up to a year while regulators write standards on grid load, water use, and ratepayer costs. Hochul says the pause is meant to stop AI-driven buildout from raising utility bills before rules exist. Other states are watching it as a possible template.
