Norm AI hits unicorn with $120M round

Norm AI raised $120M Series C at a $1.2B valuation, building an AI-native law firm combined with supervisory AI for agents operating in regulated environments.

Norm AI closed a $120 million Series C on July 7, reaching a $1.2 billion valuation. The round was led by Khosla Ventures and joined by Bain Capital Ventures, Craft Ventures, Coatue, Vanguard, New York Life, TIAA, Tony James (former Blackstone president and COO), Jeff Hammes (former Kirkland and Ellis chairman), and Fenwick. Total capital raised since the company’s July 2023 founding now exceeds $260 million.

Founder and CEO John Nay spent a decade at the intersection of AI and law research, most recently as a Stanford CodeX fellow and adjunct professor who created NYU School of Law’s first AI course. He also founded Brooklyn Investment Group, an SEC-registered AI-powered investment adviser.

Three interlocking parts

Norm AI operates through three components that are intended to be used together rather than independently:

Norm Law is an AI-native law firm staffed by licensed attorneys, including partners recruited from Sidley Austin, Ropes and Gray, Kirkland and Ellis, Simpson Thacher, and eight other major firms. It handles legal work using Norm’s own AI agents supervised by human attorneys. Billing is outcome-based rather than hourly. Mike Schmidtberger, former chairman of Sidley Austin’s executive committee, chairs Norm Law.

Norm Technology builds the legal AI agents that Norm Law uses and licenses to other enterprises.

Supervisory AI is a verification layer designed to oversee AI agents operating in regulated environments, including agents supervising other agents.

Reported clients manage over $30 trillion in combined assets under management.

What this category means

The funding round is the first unicorn for what Norm AI calls “agentic law,” a model where AI agents execute legal workflows and licensed humans supervise them rather than draft each document manually. The comparable competitors named in coverage are Harvey and Legora.

The distinguishing feature of Norm AI’s model is the supervisory layer: an agent that checks what other agents are doing against legal requirements in real time. For operators in financial services, healthcare, or any other regulated sector, this is the architecture that regulators are likely to expect when auditing AI deployments that touch legal or compliance workflows.

The guide on AI liability when something goes wrong covers the operator’s side of this question. The China companion law brief from last week showed one regulatory trajectory; the White House AI Security EO deliverables brief covered the US federal side of that same pressure.
