Taiwan indicted nine people, including an Nvidia manager, over a scheme that routed 74 Nvidia-equipped AI servers to China through Indonesia and Japan.
Taiwan’s Keelung District Prosecutors Office indicted nine people on August 24 over a scheme to smuggle 74 Nvidia-chip-equipped AI servers into China, including a senior Nvidia Taiwan business manager, Zhang Denglong, and employees of Super Micro’s New Taipei office, Albatron Technology and Chief Telecom. Prosecutors say the group routed 50 servers through Indonesia and eight through Japan, shipped the rest directly to the mainland, and had another 56 servers intercepted at Taiwan’s border before they left. Zhang is accused of forging documents to disguise servers built around Nvidia’s export-restricted B300 chips as compliant shipments, deceiving Taiwan’s export-review authorities into approving them. Eight of the nine defendants face breach-of-trust and document-forgery charges, three also face embezzlement charges, and prosecutors are seeking sentences of up to five years for seven of them.
The Taiwan case is separate from, but connected to, a US Department of Justice prosecution over a roughly $2.5 billion Supermicro-server smuggling scheme, in which Supermicro co-founder Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw was arrested in March. Supermicro itself has not been charged in either case; the company said the conduct alleged violates its own policies and that it is cooperating with investigators.
What it means for you
This is the second export-control case this summer to reach a named individual at a major chip or server vendor rather than an anonymous reseller, following Treasury’s smuggling allegations against Moonshot AI in July. If your supply chain runs advanced Nvidia hardware through any regional reseller, distributor, or systems integrator, this is a signal that customs and export-review paperwork is getting real scrutiny at the individual level, and “the paperwork said it was compliant” is no longer a safe assumption to build on.
