South Korea pledges $900B+ for AI chips
Samsung and SK Group committed over $900 billion to memory-chip manufacturing and AI data centers through 2035, citing demand for high-bandwidth memory.
Samsung and SK Group announced combined commitments of over $900 billion in semiconductor and AI investment through 2035. The memory-specific portion includes $518 billion for four new fabrication plants in southwestern South Korea and $52 billion for a high-bandwidth memory packaging hub in the central region, targeting the global memory shortage that the companies describe as “RAMageddon.” SK Group is separately committing $356 billion to AI data centers through 2035. Samsung’s new Gwangju fab and a Haenam AI data center make 2026 a year of active site selection, not just announced intent.
