Threads rolls Meta AI into DMs worldwide

Meta AI is now available in Threads direct messages globally, letting users privately ask about posts, images, links or videos without leaving the app.

Meta began rolling out Meta AI to every Threads user’s direct messages globally on July 27, expanding a feature it had tested only in its public feed since May, per Engadget and 9to5Mac. Inside a DM thread, a user can hand Meta AI a specific post, photo, link, or clip from Threads and then keep asking follow-up questions privately, one on one, without any of it appearing in the public feed. Meta frames the move as a response to user feedback wanting more context from its assistant without having to make the conversation public. The same private-chat pattern already exists for Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp; Meta says it is still separately testing the public-feed version of Meta AI in five countries.

What it means for operators

This mirrors the pattern already playing out across ChatGPT and Claude’s voice mode expansion and Alexa Plus’s MCP-based smart-home push: consumer AI assistants are converging on being reachable everywhere a user already is, rather than living in a separate app. If your product or content strategy assumes people discover an assistant through a dedicated interface, that assumption is getting weaker every quarter as incumbents like Meta wire their assistants directly into existing messaging surfaces instead. Builders working on Meta’s Muse Spark model API should note that distribution, not model quality alone, is increasingly the battleground these companies are fighting over.
