Anthropic adds Ben Bernanke to benefit trust

Ben Bernanke joins Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust, which holds board-appointment authority and advises on AI risk. Trustees hold no equity.

Anthropic added Ben Bernanke to its Long-Term Benefit Trust on July 9, expanding the oversight body to four trustees.

Bernanke served as Federal Reserve Chair from 2006 to 2014, leading the central bank through the 2008 financial crisis and the recovery that followed. He spent over two decades as an academic economist, primarily at Princeton, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2022 for his research on how banks amplify or absorb financial crises. He currently holds a fellowship at the Brookings Institution.

What the Trust does

The Long-Term Benefit Trust holds authority to appoint Anthropic’s board members and advises leadership on decisions that involve AI risks and societal impacts. Trustees receive no equity in Anthropic and are paid only for their time and service, a structure designed to create a financial firewall between the trustees and the company’s commercial outcomes.

Bernanke joins three existing trustees: Neil Buddy Shah, CEO of the Clinton Health Access Initiative and Trust chair; Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security; and Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Why this appointment stands out

The three existing trustees bring backgrounds in public health, security policy, and international relations. Bernanke adds macroeconomic credibility and experience managing systemic risk at the scale of the global financial system.

The appointment fits a broader pattern. Anthropic’s California state government deal and its drug discovery program for neglected diseases both depend on the company being seen as a trustworthy long-term institution rather than a pure product vendor. Governance appointments like this one are part of how that positioning is maintained.
