OpenAI's new Apple Messages plugin lets ChatGPT Work and Codex users search, summarize, draft, and send iMessage, SMS, and RCS texts on Apple silicon Macs.
OpenAI shipped a plugin on August 20 that connects ChatGPT to the Messages app on Apple silicon Macs, letting the assistant search message history, summarize past threads, draft replies, and send new texts across iMessage, SMS, and RCS. It works from prompts like cross-referencing a contact’s schedule to suggest dinner times, drafting a follow-up based on yesterday’s conversation, or scanning texts for birthdays to add to a calendar.
The plugin is available now for desktop users on ChatGPT Work and Codex, installed through the Plugins menu, and it only runs on Apple silicon, Intel Macs aren’t supported. OpenAI has per-send approval turned on by default, requiring a manual confirmation before any drafted text actually goes out, and the company is explicitly telling users not to grant persistent send permission, since that removes the last check before a message is dispatched.
What it means for you
This is another entry in the same category as OpenAI’s push into ChatGPT for Sites, Codex, and Work, assistants getting write access to the tools you already live in rather than staying confined to a chat window. The approval-by-default design is the right call given how easy it is for an agent to misread intent in a casual text thread, if you deploy this for yourself or a team, keep that per-send confirmation on and treat any request to disable it as a red flag rather than a convenience ask, the same caution Binance is applying to AI agents trading with real money via required human checkpoints.
