Google launches a Gemini hub for students

Google's new Student Hub bundles study notebooks, flashcards, and Deep Research in Gemini Live, plus a free year of AI Pro (US) or AI Plus (140+ countries).
Google launched a Student Hub inside the Gemini app on August 20, at gemini.google.com/students, centralizing study notebooks, flashcards, practice quizzes, and syllabus tracking that already existed across Gemini in scattered form. New pieces include Deep Research inside Gemini Live, so students can request a research report and then talk through it by voice, and 3D interactive visuals Gemini can generate for a lesson. Gemini can also scan a syllabus and add exam dates and assignment deadlines straight to Google Calendar.
The bigger draw is the offer attached to it: eligible US college students get a full year of Google AI Pro free, normally $19.99 a month, which includes higher Gemini usage limits, Gemini Spark, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5TB of storage. Students in more than 140 other countries get a year of the lighter AI Plus tier instead, with higher limits, Gemini Omni access, and 400GB of storage. Both offers have to be redeemed by December 31, 2026.
What it means for you
If you run a team with student interns, contractors, or new grads on the roster, this is worth flagging before the December 31 deadline, a year of AI Pro at zero cost is a meaningful perk with real usage-limit headroom attached. For everyone else, the hub itself isn’t a new capability so much as OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens push and Google’s own 950-million-user Gemini milestone both playing out the same way, labs are racing to lock in the next generation of users on their platform early, the same instinct behind Google’s new “preferred sources” button for keeping readers inside its ecosystem.
