Google adds reader controls to Search

Google shipped an embeddable Preferred Sources button for publishers, natural-language Discover controls, and audio briefings to give readers more say.

Google shipped three personalization features on August 20. Publishers can now embed a “Preferred Sources” button directly on their own site; a reader who taps it gets that outlet added to their Preferred Sources list, which pushes its stories higher in Search results, Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode answers. Inside the Google app, Discover’s three-dot menu on any card now opens a natural-language control where a reader can type what topics or links they want to see more or less of, in their own words, instead of picking from fixed categories. And the Google News app on Android now lets users curate audio briefings by topic, with source attribution and links to the full article on every item.

The Preferred Sources button lands directly on top of publishers’ biggest fear about generative search: an Ahrefs study published in February found that AI Overviews correlate with a 58% drop in click-through rates on top-ranking pages, as more searches get answered on the results page itself instead of sending a click to the source.

What it means for you

Embedding the Preferred Sources button costs nothing and is worth doing if you run a content site, it’s a direct lever readers can pull to tell Google’s ranking systems they prefer you, and Google has already shown it will act on user-supplied source preferences elsewhere in Search. Don’t expect it to move the needle much on its own: it depends on readers noticing a button most will never see, while the structural problem, AI Overviews answering the query before anyone reaches your page, is untouched. It’s the same category of partial fix as Cloudflare’s pay-per-crawl and Apple’s per-use publisher payments for Siri, publishers get a new mechanism to claim value back from AI platforms, but none of them address the underlying traffic collapse at the source.
