Cline 4.0 adds plugins and a marketplace
Cline 4.0, out June 26, rebuilds its VS Code coding agent on an SDK and adds a plugins system, a Skills and MCP marketplace, and queued prompts.
Cline, the open-source coding agent, shipped version 4.0.0 on June 26. The headline change is structural: the VS Code extension now runs on Cline’s own SDK, the same one behind its CLI. On top of that runtime the release adds a Customize marketplace for finding and installing Skills, MCP servers, and plugins, so the agent can pull in tools and reusable workflows instead of only writing code.
Two smaller features matter day to day. Prompts you type while Cline is mid-task now queue up and show as pending, and you can cancel them before they run. You can also edit an earlier message and regenerate from that point. The release wires in ClinePass, a flat monthly subscription that sits alongside pay-as-you-go and bring-your-own-key access, plus new provider plumbing that adds models like GLM 5.2, Kimi K2.7 Code, and Qwen 3.7 Plus.
What it means for you
The change to watch is a breaking one: command auto-approval is now off by default on new and reset setups. That is a safer default, since an agent that runs shell commands without asking is exactly how a coding agent gets tricked into running attacker code. After updating, confirm your approval settings before you hand it a real task. Subagents are temporarily disabled while the team stabilizes them, and the legacy Explain Changes button is gone.
