Cursor cuts to $7/month, India only
Cursor launched a ₹649/month India-only tier built on its own models, undercutting its $20 Pro plan as it courts its third-largest, fastest-growing market.
Cursor launched Cursor Start on July 28, a India-only subscription priced at ₹649 a month, roughly $7, well below the standard $20-a-month Pro plan. India is already Cursor’s third-largest market globally and, per the company, home to its highest concentration of power users, with the India user base more than tripling over the past year. Cursor says the tier is built to be commercially sustainable rather than a subsidized loss leader, running on Cursor’s own AI models rather than third-party frontier models, which carry lower operating cost per query.
The launch lands a little over a month after SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor’s parent company Anysphere in a $60 billion all-stock deal, with closing expected in Q3 2026; the deal has not affected Cursor’s product roadmap so far.
What it means for operators
This is the clearest evidence yet that vertically integrated models change vendor pricing math: Cursor can profitably sell a $7 tier in a price-sensitive market specifically because it’s routing to its own models instead of paying OpenAI or Anthropic per token. If you’re negotiating enterprise pricing with any AI coding tool, ask directly whether a comparable in-house-model tier exists for your usage pattern, since the SpaceX acquisition that’s funding Cursor’s expansion plans, and the Grok 4.5 model it already ships in-house, are both reminders that a tool’s pricing power today depends heavily on whose model is actually running your requests, not just on the plan name on the invoice.
