Nvidia ships Cosmos 3 Edge, locks in Japan
Nvidia's 4B-parameter Cosmos 3 Edge world model ships for robots, alongside a Japan-wide physical AI push spanning Toyota, Mizuho, Canon, Fujifilm and RIKEN.
Nvidia introduced Cosmos 3 Edge on July 15, a 4-billion-parameter on-device world model built on Nvidia Nemotron that lets robots and vision-AI agents perceive their surroundings and generate actions without a cloud round trip. It extends the Cosmos 3 family Nvidia launched at GTC Taipei in May, runs on Nvidia RTX GPUs, DGX systems, and Jetson modules including the new T2000 and T3000, and Nvidia says developers can adapt it to a specific robot, vehicle, or sensor setup in about a day. It ships alongside new Metropolis vision-AI libraries that Nvidia says cut vision-agent build time by at least 6x.
The model landed during Jensen Huang’s Tokyo visit, where Nvidia also announced a country-wide physical AI push. Toyota is expanding DRIVE AGX integration for autonomous driving, Kawasaki Heavy Industries is building surgical robots, Mizuho and SMBC’s Japan Research Institute are deploying Nemotron-based AI infrastructure, Canon and Fujifilm are shipping Blackwell-powered medical imaging systems, and RIKEN is standing up two Blackwell-based quantum-HPC systems. Ten more Japanese firms, including AIRoA, FANUC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Kubota, NEC, SoftBank, Sony, and Yaskawa Electric, plan to become members of Nvidia’s Cosmos Coalition, the open-model group formed alongside Cosmos 3 in May.
For robotics and vision-AI builders, Cosmos 3 Edge is the more immediately useful part: a real, lightweight world model you can post-train on your own hardware in about a day, not another benchmark demo.
