Pew Research found 35% of pages published since ChatGPT's 2022 launch show significant AI-authorship signs, versus 10% across a broader recent sample.
Pew Research Center analyzed close to 500,000 English-language web pages from the Common Crawl archive, using Open Pangram’s detection technology, and found that 35% of pages published after ChatGPT’s November 2022 launch show significant signs of AI authorship, compared with about 10% across a broader recent sample spanning five years. The rate varies sharply by domain: .com pages showed AI-authorship signals at roughly 10 times the rate of .edu or .gov pages, both near 1%, while .org sites came in around 4.6%. Pew also tracked AI-writing markers, em dashes, Oxford commas, “it’s not X, it’s Y” constructions, rising over time, while cautioning that detection tools can misclassify individual pages even if the aggregate trend holds.
