AMD to invest up to $5B in Anthropic

AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership on July 22: Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 GPUs, packaged in AMD’s Helios rack-scale systems alongside EPYC “Venice” CPUs and Pensando networking, with the first gigawatt going live in the first half of 2027. In exchange, AMD is putting as much as $5 billion of its own equity capital into Anthropic, released as deployment milestones are hit.

The deal builds on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD’s current-generation MI355X chips, and the two companies are also launching a multi-year engineering collaboration: Anthropic will use Claude to help optimize AMD’s ROCm software stack and Instinct workloads, while AMD adopts Claude broadly across its own engineering and product teams. Anthropic’s compute strategy under the deal splits between chips it owns outright and capacity it rents through cloud providers or neoclouds, rather than relying on a single hardware vendor.

For anyone building on Claude, this is a supply-diversification story more than an immediate capability change: it gives Anthropic a second major GPU supplier alongside NVIDIA, which matters for negotiating leverage and capacity resilience but won’t show up as a pricing or performance shift until MI450 capacity actually comes online in 2027. The bigger signal is competitive: AMD picking up billions in guaranteed demand from a top-tier lab is exactly the kind of named-partner validation NVIDIA has been racing to publish for its own next-gen Vera Rubin platform, and it puts real revenue behind AMD’s long-standing pitch that it can be a credible second source for frontier-scale training and inference.
