OpenAI will launch ChatGPT ads in 31 European countries on August 24, its largest ad expansion yet, shown only to Free and Go users.
OpenAI will start showing ads in ChatGPT across 31 European markets on August 24, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, and the Benelux and Scandinavian countries. It’s the company’s largest ad expansion since the pilot launched in the US in February and grew to eight more markets over the following six months.
Ads will be visually separated from ChatGPT’s own responses, and only Free and Go tier users will see them; paid Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers keep an ad-free experience. OpenAI says advertisers won’t get access to chat histories and no conversation content is shared with them. Access starts through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team and agency partners, with self-service Ads Manager access coming later this year. OpenAI reports ad revenue is up more than a quarter month-over-month so far in August.
What it means for you
If you’re building anything on top of the free ChatGPT experience in Europe, expect a materially different UI for those users starting August 24, and account for it in support docs or onboarding flows that reference “what ChatGPT looks like.” The revenue growth number matters more for reading OpenAI’s overall financial trajectory: ad revenue is now a real, fast-growing line item alongside subscriptions and API usage, not a side experiment, which affects how much pricing pressure OpenAI can put on rivals like Anthropic, whose own revenue is growing even faster. It lands the same week as Replit’s new free tier running on GPT-5.6 Luna, another sign OpenAI is leaning harder on volume-driven revenue lines.
