Emerald AI raises $150M to make data centers grid-flexible

Emerald AI hit a $1.05B valuation on a Series A for software that lets AI data centers throttle power use during grid stress instead of just consuming flat out.

Emerald AI raised $150 million in an oversubscribed Series A at a $1.05 billion valuation, the company announced August 25, co-led by Energize Capital and DCVC and bringing its total funding to more than $220 million. Emerald’s software dynamically adjusts how much power an AI data center draws from the grid in response to grid conditions, rather than simply running flat-out or shutting workloads down, an approach the company says can unlock more than 100 gigawatts of capacity on the existing U.S. grid.

The company has completed five commercial demonstrations and says its software now runs at multi-megawatt, full-data-center scale for customers spanning AI labs, data center operators, and electric utilities. In Manassas, Virginia, Emerald is working with Digital Realty and Nvidia to bring online what the companies call the world’s first power-flexible AI factory, a nearly 100-megawatt site.

What it means for you

This round bets that grid electricity, more than GPU supply, ends up gating how much AI data center capacity actually gets built, a theme running through Nvidia’s own shift into financing AI infrastructure deals. If a cloud or inference provider you depend on runs capacity through a grid-constrained region, software like this determines whether that provider gets more capacity approved at all, which can eventually show up as availability windows or pricing tiers tied to grid conditions rather than flat, always-on access.
