Chris Malone, who led OpenAI's data center strategy, has left the company, one of more than a dozen executive departures reported so far in 2026.
Chris Malone, OpenAI’s head of data centers, left the company last week, TechCrunch and CNBC reported August 25, citing the Wall Street Journal. Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025, following a stretch of roughly five years at Meta that came after more than ten years at Google beforehand, arriving not long after the launch of Stargate, OpenAI’s data center buildout with Oracle and SoftBank. His reporting line had shifted from OpenAI president Greg Brockman to OpenAI vice president Sachin Katti under a recent reorganization; three other executives, Uday Ruddarraju, Brent Mayo, and Spas Lazarov, now split oversight of the data center team, build-and-delivery program, and engineering respectively.
The exit adds to a string Business Insider has tallied at 13 executive departures in 2026, including chief revenue officer Denise Dresser, who left after roughly eight months on the job two weeks before this report. OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees this month that OpenAI expects to be a public company in 2027.
What it means for you
OpenAI’s product roadmap and pricing depend heavily on the compute buildout Malone was hired to run, so a departure at that level is a data point on execution risk, not just a personnel note, for anyone planning around OpenAI capacity or pricing. Read it alongside OpenAI’s broader executive turnover: a single exit rarely changes anything for you directly, but a pattern of departures at this level is the kind of vendor-risk signal worth logging even when nothing in your own account or contract changes yet.
