Stripe in talks to buy OpenRouter for ~$10B

Stripe is in talks to acquire OpenRouter, the marketplace developers use to route API calls across hundreds of proprietary and open-weight models, in a deal that could value the startup near $10 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported July 23. That is roughly 7.7 times OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation from a funding round just two months earlier, in May. Stripe itself was last valued at $159 billion.

The two companies already work together: OpenRouter uses Stripe to process customer payments, so a deal would fold a payments relationship into full ownership. For Stripe, buying OpenRouter would be its biggest and most direct move yet into AI infrastructure, sitting the company between developers and the model providers they call rather than just processing the invoices afterward. Reporting notes talks remain fluid, a final agreement could land soon, and other technology companies have also evaluated bids for OpenRouter.
