Thrive Holdings raises $2B for AI rollups

Josh Kushner's Thrive Holdings raised roughly $2B from SoftBank, Altimeter, and D1 to buy accounting and IT services firms and redeploy AI across them.

Thrive Holdings, a holding company connected to Josh Kushner’s Thrive Capital, raised roughly $2 billion from SoftBank, Altimeter Capital, and D1 Capital Partners, according to reporting first published by The Information and confirmed by multiple open-web outlets. The round is the first outside capital the vehicle has accepted; it previously raised $1 billion from existing institutional backers of Thrive Capital. Total capital now stands at approximately $3 billion.

How the model works

Thrive Holdings targets professional services firms that have already consolidated smaller operators in accounting and IT services, acquires controlling stakes in those rollups, and then redeploys AI to automate their workflows. Original owners retain meaningful equity.

The strategy is live. Current, a portfolio company, has acquired 48 accounting firms. Engineers from Thrive and OpenAI co-built a tax-return processing agent using OpenAI’s Codex that now runs in production at Current. OpenAI holds an equity stake in Thrive Holdings, received not for cash but in exchange for providing researchers, engineering talent, and privileged access to its products for portfolio companies.

What this bet is about

Most AI capital goes into model providers or software tooling. Thrive Holdings is buying operating businesses with existing customers and revenue, then using AI to change their unit economics from inside. SoftBank, Altimeter, and D1 have each backed large AI companies independently; their shared interest here is the rollup vehicle, not the model layer.

For a related read on what changes for teams when their AI tooling provider changes hands, see SpaceXAI’s acquisition of Cursor (a lab acquiring a dev tool rather than a services rollup), where the change-of-control dynamics for dependent teams follow a similar pattern. The Norm AI $120M round from last week shows a parallel bet on AI transforming professional services in legal.
